Deep Purple - Burn (cover)
Once I have already written about a Deep Purple cover made by Cygnus. It was for one of the band's forever classics, Highway Star, and I remember I told in that post in details about what an impact Deep Purple had on me when I was a young teen. So this time I will not repeat myself
because I know that you don't like to read and can't even comprehend texts that are longer than 3 simple sentences 😒
and as a side note I would like to add that if you still haven't heard of Deep Purple, their impact on rock music - and on the history of music in general -, then please, close the internet for today and pretend that you're an indoor plant.
Indoor plants at least produce oxygen, you know.
In my very own, personal little case it is that very happy situation when my favorite band covers another favorite band of mine.
Pure orgasm, if you ask me. That loud, wet, long kind.
But as it's the case with Deep Purple, 4 very talented, amazing musicians who are all legends on their own, too, Cygnus - as the saying goes in my mother tongue - cut with their ax into a large tree (aka they took on a huge task that requires a LOT) when they decided to cover this legendary song from a legendary band.
But we know Cygnus. We already got to know them. We know how dedicated they are, how professional they are and how they give out of their hands only what they themselves are 100% satisfied with. So you can be sure, dear Reader, that these two wonderful Colombians, along with their fellow Mexican musicians again made a miracle.
It starts in an irresistibly nuclear way. Yes, our beloved rockers again took those barrels with the ☢ sign on them that contain the secret material right from Reactor no. 4. They poured it onto the floors of the studio, rubbed it into the walls and bathed their instruments in them. Deneb put enriched uranium rods on his bass as strings, Ruxx coated his drumstick with plutonium-241
and I swear they even gargled with this material before recording the song
and the result of their action is this tear-jerking, heart-throbbing, mouth-watering, antidepressant, beautiful nuclear fallout called "Burn".
Even the beginning is sweeping. It's something I always admired in Blu: no matter what kind of theme he plays, whether it's rockabilly, blues rock, Slipknot, Rammstein, rock opera or reggae, he always plays it with a very high degree of professionalism and perfection. As if he was just doing some warmup fingerwork. And since we know well that those musicians work the hardest who - seemingly - play the easiest, Blu deserves all the respect you can pay.
And then Deneb hits the bass strings uranium rods and you melt right there.
Glenn Hughes, are you watching?...
Reny brings the Jon Lord level right there as he joins with the keyboard theme. This together, our favorite Colombians being the very collected, very precise and totally radioactive rhythm section as they are, holding the two Mexicans on their shoulders, so they can show their talent and preparedness. And this is just the beginning, dear Reader, because Deneb starts to sing.
How very much I love it when he is singing like that.
He does this rarely, there are just a few songs (and covers) where he uncovers this flavor of his voice. Energy, the love of life, enthusiasm, joy and the unapologetic happiness over the small beauties of the world all shine through his vocals. It makes your eyes wet, your heart race and you start to believe in beauty again. Keep your ears and your heart open, dear Reader, because this Colombian magician does this miracle very seldom, and you're very lucky now that you can witness it.
In the meantime Ruxx puts Ian Paice's drum fills on another level. He lets all the energy in his hands flow, not holding himself back for a second and this drum magic along with Deneb's sweeping voice slowly start to demolish every wall, may it be around your heart or the one that keeps you away from your neighbors.
None of them is a loss, those that kept your heart in prison should have gone long ago anyway.
As for the neighborhood, at least they get some culture.
The energy keeps flowing, Deneb is singing AND keeps radiating the radioactivity from his strings; Ruxx doesn't stop enchanting you behind his drumset; Blu is tirelessly playing the complex theme of the song, while Reny puts the cocktail cherry on the whipped cream of this fantastic, steaming hot, sweet dessert with his performance. Professionalism, elegance, precision, dedication, determination and a deep love for what they are doing.
You can only love them.
And this is the point when Ruxx enters with his voice.
All my respect goes out to David Coverdale, the original singer of this song. He is a legend, he made rock history with Deep Purple and Whitesnake as well as on his own and today's rock music wouldn't be the same without him.
But please, dear Reader, allow me to be honest and straightforward here with you. David Coverdale is nowhere near Ruxx's performance in this song. Apologies to all Deep Purple and Whitesnake fans, but this is what I think.
The chorus of this cover is everything. The alpha and the omega of all.
Deneb and Ruxx are singing it together. Ruxx hits the high notes, and whenever he does that - this is the real potential of his vocals - the effect is like the power and energy of a flooding river. Deneb keeps putting the secret gems of his voice into your hands, making your tears flow, while you hold these treasures as if your life depended on them.
It does, but at this point you might not realize it. No worries, you will comprehend it later.
The beauty continues. Deneb is singing on his irresistible voice while controlling the nuclear radiation; Ruxx is making magic, showing his skills and talent while joining Deneb with his powerful, rusty, smoky vocals. Blu and Reny, like elegant and professional knights for these two kings keep the music flowing from under their fingers.
And then comes the chorus again.
Allow yourself it all, dear Reader. Allow this energy to go through you, allow this irresistible, masculine power to get into you deeply and possess you. Allow it to grab you and hold you tight, to love you - and love it back. Hold it back tight, give it yourself, and let it all flow through you and wash out all the sadness, grief and hopelessness from you. Let it bring you new life.
Ruxx is singing the bridge - with Deneb's backing vocals -, this is another gem of this cover. You can hear on Ruxx's voice how much he enjoys singing it, showing the countless little tunes he can sing out with his very flexible, opera singer level vocals.
As soon as his voice shows up, it disappears right there and the solo takes over.
The original song has got a very complex, guitar hero alike solo. Ritchie Blackmore assigns quite a task for any guitarist that tries to play this song, but Blu isn't the kind who scares back. The Mexican took a deep breath and plays the solo in a way - precisely, professionally, collected - that would make even Maestro Blackmore himself nod with appreciation.
In the meantime your humble chronicler discreetly admires the rhythm section and their work - of course with all the respect for Blu.
Then comes Reny's turn.
Flawless keyboard solo. Totally perfect. Just as it is supposed to be.
But behold, dear Reader. Because Ruxx returns with the second bridge and this time he will not be as polite and humble as he was in the first one. This time you will get to know the real power of his voice. Get ready for the flesh being torn off of your bones and your brain exploding out of your skull. Get ready to fall into a million pieces.
And be sure you will love it and want it again!
Before you'd find your breath, Reny returns and plays the keyboard solo ahead. This is NOT a simple experience, dear Reader, nor is it a complex experience.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience and before you realize it, you are addicted. You can't get enough of it, you want more and more, you want these wonderful musicians in your life forever, with their sweeping, powerful voices, with their talent, their unique skills, their elegance and their love for music. You want them, you can't live without them anymore and you don't even want to.
No, it's not only Reny. It's all four of them. Deneb holding it all on his strong shoulders with the bass, Ruxx being the engine with his drums and Blu with his discipline. All of them, together.
Catharsis.
And it's not the end yet. Deneb returns with his energetic, warm, flavorful voice to pick your pieces, put the flesh back on your bones and breath life into you. The warmth of his baritone gets poured on you from the top of your head to your toes, and then Ruxx gives the extra spice to it to set your blood on fire. The two wonderful Colombians again join their forces for the chorus and then they grab your hand and push you into the maelstrom of the outro.
Worry not. They jump with you. They never leave you alone.
And you can take it with yourself anywhere. It's in your heart.
